Final version of advertisement

This is our final edit of the advertisement. It ties in very well with the digipak using similar fonts and colours. It includes all the typical conventions of a music advert. The advertisement is landscape because the image we decided on was already landscape. Instead of tampering with the image or changing it we thought the idea of the advertisement being landscape was actually quite interesting and fitting with the design. I think the advert looks neat and in proportion as it is. One thing i would now change about the advert having looked back, the boldness of 'out now' because it would look better and clearer.

Final version of digipak

This is the final version of our digipak, it has been massively improved and I am really happy with the final version. I think that the fonts and the pictures look very professional. The pictures and the text seem to merge well and it looks creative and modern.
My favourite part on the digipak is this picture:

I  like this picture so much purely because it started out as two seperate pictures of Callum and Elliot but cleverly using the blur tool on fireworks Rosie managed to transform it into one picture and I think it turned out really professional, these are the two original pictures:

Q4: How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

During the whole process of making our project me and Rosie used a whole load of media technologies. From programmes on the computer to recording equipment and cameras.
During the planning and research stages we mostly just used the internet. We did this to find out about genres and audiences. We used it to find out what makes a good music video and to also find examples. The best technology we used in this, personally I would say Google.

However, when we started the construction of our own video we began to use much more technology. The most important thing would be the video recorder and also the camera. Here is a picture of these:

Obviously these pieces of equipment were vital so that we could get pictures of locations etc. as well as record the video.
This brings me to the next piece of media technology that we used very much and this was in the editing stage of the video. To edit our music video we had to use Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. We were already familiar with this software from the previous year when we made our short film and also from our preliminary task. We used it to place all the shots in the correct places, we also uploaded the song to it and spent some time matching up the miming with the lyrics in the song. We used Adobe to add in certain effects such as black and white, to double up images and also to mirror shots. Adobe was the key to our editing.

All of the shots are listed on the top left hand side and to put them in place you have to drag them down into the bottom part of the screen. That is where you can cut the clips and add in the effects, also done by dragging into this area.

For the construction of our ancillary texts we used Fireworks, we used it because it is easy to use and we could do the things we wanted using this programme. We only used the blur tool which I used to blur some photos as i demonstrated on a previous slide. Other than that we just used the programme to put the texts together and I think it was very successful.

Monday 7 November 2011

Since we handed in our drafts for the video, digipak and magazine advert we have been given quite a bit of feedback. Now we have started to make improvements on them. So far we have focused on the digipak, we have changed the fonts on the digipak and we have also changed the pictures and the layout slightly to give it a more professional feel. We have used ideas from both of us such as the font was Rosie's idea and I made the choice that we should get more pictures instead of stretching one across two pages. The magazine advert doesn't need as much work doing to it, we are just going to adjust the placing and the size of the fonts and thats all that needs doing but we may make further changes when we come to do it.
Finally I have written up a plan as we are going to do some more filming on Wednesday 9th November as we did not have enough film for the draft, we will record on Wednesday and then edit on Thursday and Friday. Here is a copy of what we need to film. Although we have this plan it is likely we will film shots as well as the ones written down.

Draft magazine advert

This is mine and Rosie's magazine advert for St Raymond's album. We decided to keep it simple and just have simplistic pieces of text. We are really happy with the advert and think it ties in well with the digipak using similar fonts and colours. We also took this picture. The coordination with the digipak would in real life help to promote the album because people would recognise it.

Draft Digipak

Front cover, Back Page, Inlay

Inlay

This is our digipak, It is very simplistic with an aim to look edgy and eyecatching. We wanted all of the wri ting and colours to coordinate well so there was clear theme throughout the whole digipak. The images are pictures that we have taken ourselves of the real St Raymond to add top the authenticity of the digipak.

Research into video directors

James Lees:
James Lees has directed several music videos such as You Me At Six ft. Chiddy Bang 'Rescue Me', If the kids 'Life Is Now', Two Door Cinema Club 'Undercover Martyn' and Shakira's 'Wakka Wakka'. These videos are all very creative and different. I would describe him as fresh and youthful with all of his music video ideas. These are my two favourite videos by James Lee:
If The Kids 'Life is Now': This video is one I admire because it is very natural in the way it has been filmed and it shows my generation doing things typically of them e.g hanging around drinking alcohol and having fun, playing games and just generally enjoying themselves because they can. I like the fact that it's not a performance, the actors an actresses aren't particularly playing up to the camera in an obvious and fake way. It is a video that you could watch and think that they had no idea they were being filmed. The lighting is all very natural throughout the video. It's very modern with they way that the shots are in slow motion and also some sped up. Jump cuts which I am also fond of are used throughout the video. There are lots of quick cuts that fit to the beat of the song.

Two Door Cinema Club 'Undercover Martyn'. This video is very different to the previous one. It is definitely a quirky video that is also creative and slightly unusual. I thought that the idea of the whole video being shot of the band laying down and being held up was interesting and fun. I haven't seen a video like it before and so it really grabbed my attention when I first came across it. The shots used are very simple but effective as it goes from close-ups to long shots often. The plaquards used are classic and have been used in videos for many years but in this video they are used for just one word in the song and it goes well with the music and the surroundings, they are very effective. Similarly to the other video it also uses quick cuts between shots that go with the beat. The video is slightly surreal but in a humorous way because of the fact that they seem to be floating. The coloured material that is waved around the band look good and add something to the video making it look nice and impressive. Overall the video is very simple compared the other one yet very exciting with it's random formations of the band and colours.

From observing some of James Lees videos I have noticed that it is typical of him to use lots of quick cuts during videos filling them with interesting things to look at. He tends to make very creative and innovative videos that I would say are aimed mainly at a young generation of teenagers and above. The videos are often colourful and depending on the band they can also have a slightly vintage feel to them and that is what I like about James Lees. This is his website: http://vimeo.com/jameslees/videos/page:2/sort:newest

Research into digipak covers

Kings of Leon inlay

This is the front cover of the Kings of Leon's album 'Because of the Times'. The cover is simple but eyecaqthcing. It just consists of the two images on a plain black background. As the images are a skull and a smashed lightbulb above it on the black background I think this would make the audience expect quite a sinister more rock based album. The cover could also symbolise an idea with the positioning of the lightlbulb over the skull, that idea could be the songs in the album that have now been created.

On the inside of the inlay the black background is continued which still looks effective. It simply has lists of quoted and song titles on the page in a simple font with a colour change as it goes further down. The colours are white, yellow and orange which may be symbolising fire. The idea of the smashed lightbulb carries onto this page as there is pieces of glass that appear to be shattering in the corner of the page. So the theme is carried on inside the digipak.

Finally on on the inlay there is a picture of each band member on a full page. Each picture is a close up of their faces at some angle. The pictures are black yellow and orange which continues with the idea of fire as did the writing on the other pages.
Overall the digipak is very sharp looking with it's simple but bold colour schemes. It reflects on the band and brings around different ideas of symbolics depending on the audience therefore I think it is creative and innovative.

Video Analysis, Rizzle Kicks 'Down With The Trumpets'

This video is different from the other one because it's set in a different area and the song is about a completely different thing.

Camera shots:
The vast majority of shots in the Rizzle Kicks video are panning shots and two shots. This is because they are walking around and the camera is following them on their journey. As they are a duo it makes sense that there are a load of two shots throughout. There is also some slow motion and sped up parts to emphasise certain shots in the video. My favourite shot sequence is a series of quick cuts making it appear as though they are falling onto the ground/a wall and it is really efective. These shots are simulating the feeling of being 'high' as that is what the song is based on.

Lighting:
There is no artificial lighting used in the video as it is all filmed in daylight there isn't much need for lighting to be used. There is only occasional shots where the contrast appears to have been tampered with. The video is fairly light the whoole way through and thre is not much of a chnge to symbolise anything.

Mise en scene:
The locations in the video tend to be urban built up areas. My favourite location in the video is in the shot where the sea is in the bachground and there are the little wooden huts along the coast. There are also shots in a house at the start and random parts of the video throughout. Other than that the majority of the video is shot along streets and pathways in some sort of park. That is in the shots that are following the boys on their journey around.

Costume

When me and Rosie discussed costumes for the boys we took into consideration the genre of music and what type of outfits are seen in similar videos.

Callum Burrow: For Callum's costume we have chosen a pair of skinny jeans, a hat, a checked shirt buttoned up to the top with a coat over the top. For his shoes we would like him to wear a pair of Vans.

Elliot Labbate: Elliot's outfit will be wearing skinny jeans as well, mo hat, a band/statement T-shirt with preferably a pair of converse.

Risk Assessment

We need to carry out a risk assessment on locations and equipment to make sure that we are aware of any safety hazards and make sure that we go to any lengths to avoid them happening.
Here is our risk assessment:

Time management

Me and Rosie need to ensure that we have some sort of time table which will allow us to keep organised and think about what shots we are going got film and when. It is also important that we check with the band that they are free to come along and take part in the video, otherwise we would be wasting valuable time not being able to film.
We have decided on the first two filming dates for our video. The First day of filming will be Monday 19th September at 3:20pm and the following one will be Sunday 25th September. We aren't entirely sure how much time we are going to need therefore we are going to wait until after Mondays filming session to see how much progress we have made and we will then decide whether we need further time to film after Sunday and set the dates from there.
In the First session we are going to record as much of the recording studio shots as possible and if we don't manage to fit them all in we will carry on with that next time. If we do manage to finish them all we will then move onto filming some outside shots depending on the weather.
In the second session we will carry on with the outside shots and possibly finish recording. If we do not finish filming on the Sunday we will then confirm another date for filming.

Brainstorming

Mock of digipak

We have created a mock up of the digipak for St Raymond's song. It is only a very rough version and there are things that we have since spoke about that we would like to add to our digipak to improve it and make it look interesting and suit the genre. We have tried to incorporate some of the shots we will be using in the video and take some pictures in the same style to have featured on the inlay of the digipak. Whether the pictures be behind words or the main feature of the page we have not yet decided.

Camera angles and shots for our video

In our video we have decided on the types of shots and angles that we will be using. We'd like to use a lot of close-up shots throughout the video as well as long shots and two shots. We like the idea of having some jump cuts in the video similarly to the ones we have observed together. We would like to play around with some of the images we record by making some of the mirrored and possibly blurring out and focusing on one main thing in a few of the shots. We would also like to use some low angle shots when we are recording outside as we like the idea of being able to see the sky in the picture as well as the singer or whatever else may be in the shot at the same time.

Mirrored shot
Blurred/focused

We want to use a variety of shots such as the ones I listed to keep our audience interested and entertained by our video. We may also change the brightness in the video and try some different effects on the recordings once we have uploaded them to be edited.

Props

We will not require many props during our video. The only things that we will need will be musical equipment such as acoustic guitars, microphones, some AUX leads and possibly some headphones. Other than this we won't be needing anything else.

Actors & Performers

For our music video we decided to ask the artists of the song 'She Said No,  if they would like to be the main actors in the music video. They said yes and therefore they are our actors. This is perfect because it means we can have elements of them performing their song and if anyone is going to be in the video we couldn't choose anyone better than the composers because they have the feel for the music and the song. We may also have a few extra girls in the video with small parts but we have not yet decided on who or how many.

Research into genres

Music as a whole can be divided into many different genres. This is to do with the cultures and the sounds of the music. All people listen to different types of music because songs can all sound very different depending on the types of unstruments used, as well as DJ dance music, orchetra's, singers and rappers all having very different voices and styles. These differences are whhat make up the various genres such as: Dance, Pop, Classical, Indie, Rock, Metal, Drum & Bass, Jazz, Contemporary, Country, & Acoustic. There are many more these are just a few of the widely listened to genres. You can occasionally get a fusion of genres such pop-rock.

Pop:
Pop music is the most commercialised type of music to date. Also known as chart or popular music. This type of genre consists of boy/girl bands and solo artists usually of the younger generation. The songs are often simple and catchy with the target audience of youths. Pop songs typically sing about partying and love. Rarely using instruments to create their sounds but more technological methods. Samples: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xA3tHGWbuF4, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swcULf1ATyU.
Here are some pop artists of today:

Dance:
This is the type of music you would here out in the latest clubs, it is upbeat music which people tend to dance to. Not all dance music consist of lyrics but some do. It is a very popular type of music also incorporated into the music charts. Dance artists are often solo or in a group of two, occasionly they sing as well as playing their music through elctronic devices, DJing. Sometimes they will compose the music and then collaborate with another artist who may sing (often a pop singer). I would say that it is a version of pop music but more of a sub genre. It is also aimed at youths. Here are some samples of dance music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGghkjpNCQ8&ob=av2e, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noPHpyWUFsI.
These are some dance music artists:

Rock:
Rock is more of an emotional type of music and usually darker than pop music. Rock bands usually consist of 4-5 people, including guitarists, a drummer and a singer. More often than not you will find that rock groups are made up of males rather than females. There are different types of rock some lighter and others more heavy for example, melodic rock, alternative rock, avant garde, metal and punk rock. This type of music is aimed at a large range of people of all ages. Here are some samples: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JCE87DymKQ&feature=related, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMX2lPum_pg&ob=av2e.
These are some rock artits:

RnB:
RnB or Rhythm and Blues music was originally known as race music, it is basically made up of a range of black artists for black audiences. Different sub genres incorporated into RnB are: Jazz, Gospel and Blues. It was named RnB because of the original name being seen as racist. This is some RnB samples: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gyLR4NfMiI&ob=av2ehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JipHEz53sU&ob=av2e.
